Your Neighborhood Market - The Stock Market

Your Neighborhood Market - The Stock Market
THE STOCK MARKETThe stock market is a huge market. That's what it is, just a huge market where stocks (pieces of paper which represents portions of a company which may be traded as transferable certificates) are exchanged (bought or sold) with money as the bottom line exchange factor, just like in any grocery store on Main St. USA. Stocks are sold and bought in lots (100 stocks, 1000 stocks, etc...) or separately by stock. The price of stocks is determined by Supply and Demand. This is the interplay of the quantity of products or goods offered for sale at certain price and the quantity of products or goods purchased or bought at those prices in a free market. This is a very important point, because it relates to everything you do when buying or selling. Think about selling your house now in this market... OK. Now, think about buying milk at the grocery market. It's the same market but at a different level.Did you ever wonder why dairy products are very reasonable one week and then two weeks later the price is doubled?! This is supply and demand at work. The demand for certain product goes up, and then the price goes up. This is just like the stock market. Depending upon how good a company is producing, as in good products, showing good customer service, selling a great marketing program, the company may have a large demand and this means the price of stock will go up. If the company is favored in news releases, this will also tend to increase stock prices. This also works in the negative direction as well, where the company produces inferior products and has bad news releases about it.Stock trading is easier than ever now with online companies like Scottrade, optionsXpress, schwab, etc. Trades are fast, commissions are low, training and advanced tools are at your fingertips.EXCHANGESStocks are listed and traded at several organized exchanges in the United States, which make up the stock market. To be "listed" the company must meet certain criteria such as number of employees, size of company, how much profit the company makes, etc... Stocks and other securities (bonds, commodities, options...) are traded at exchanges with a physical location or on a computerized system. The reason exchanges were created was to provide a safe and fair platform where there were established rules and procedures to trade stocks and securities. In the United States the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulates the exchanges and ensures the rules and procedures are kept fair for all. There are four exchanges in the United States for trading stocks. They are:* The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)* Chicago Board of Exchange (CBOE)* The American Stock Exchange (AMEX)* The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotes (NASDAQ)Some of the exchanges are fully automated systems which electronically match buyers to sellers of stock. You must have a buyer of stock for every seller of stock in the market. Other exchanges are what are called "Open Outcry" auction systems. If you have ever watched stock market movies such as "Trading Places" or "Wall Street", you'll know what this looks like. This huge market has, to some degree, an effect upon everyone whether you understand or not. If you are a fund market manager or a school teacher, you're affected by prices and commodities of the market. You both may drink orange juice and buy gasoline for your cars. You both may invest in company stock, commodities, mutual funds or securities of one way or the other. The point is that everyone invests. What you buy or what you sell someway relates back to the markets. This is YOUR market as well and your neighbor's. Your investment into your knowledge of the markets will benefit you whether it's the relationship in stocks, commodities, mutual funds or saving accounts. The more you invest in you own knowledge, the better prepared you will be.

If market goes up and that we start to see frequent updates, this will suggest that it's about to reverse it or simply stall. It's quite similar skill that sellers and buyers that the actually impact the stock market are the mutual funds and also institutional investors. The stock market goes in way that they take. That will become visible as a change in price & volume numbers. If you discover the stock market indicates the price movement in a particular way, without a relevant increase in a volume, it might indicate that it is sending bogus messages & you should be even more careful before investing in it. It's recognized that stock market forces are the demand as well as supply, except when something special occurs. If you will find more buyers - which suggest there's a cost increase on the higher volume when compared to the sellers-the stock market is trending upward. Instead, you will find more sellers, lower costs on higher volume than the stock market is trending down. You must pay attention to signs that show the variation in stock market. If the cost and volume were distinct from the existing trend takes place often, you should be ready for change.Reading the stock market on the day to day may not always be helpful, but you need to concentrate to the general way of the market and try to identify the cautions signs of the change is upcoming.Apart from the costs as well as volume trends, there are some other methods of looking at stock market trends. They might be classified into three different types, primary, secondary, short term trends & secular or long term trends. That belief is based on practice of technical analysis that may occasionally be inconsistent with the standard academic view of the financial market. When we do the technical analysis, we imagine the stock costs move with market trends.Another theory is that market prices were as cavalier. They just move randomly. Past trends are just a collection of the random movements.

What Are Stock Market Crashes

What Are Stock Market Crashes
The phrase stock market crash brings to mind images of speeding ticker tape machines and panic on the trading floor. The common perception is that stock market crashes are random and unpredictable phenomenon. There is, however, a pattern to the markets larger fluctuations. The market crash is a familiar term but an unfamiliar concept. To understand what happens in the market when a crash occurs, we first need to look to the period that precedes a crash. The cycle begins at a time when the stock market is weak and people are generally pessimistic about the financial future of themselves and country. The bear market has caused most people to sell many stocks in order to save some of their investment. This is the point where the smart investors can pick up undervalued stock at bargain prices. These smart investors know that the market will be turning in the near future and they can resell these stocks for a much higher price. This accumulation of undervalued stock causes the market to start to rise. The rising stocks will attract the attention of mutual funds, and as the mutual funds invest in the stock, billions of dollars are reintroduced to the market place. Mutual fund investments cause the market to gain even more as do investments by institutional investors. At this point, the market has begun to stabilize and stocks are no longer at bargain prices. Stock prices most likely reflect the intrinsic value of the stocks. Those who invested early have large profits. The average investor though may still be skeptical about the stock market, given the recent bear market. As the stock prices continue to stabilize and more institutional investors get re- involved in the stock market, the individual investors begin to notice. The individual investors began buying stocks the market is flooded with capital since the individual investors make up the cast majority of total investors in the market. This bull market exists as long as the market is on the rise and all stock involved are all gaining in value. Bull markets make everyone happy. Investors and companies alike are making money and enjoying it. There is a kind of euphoria in the country, and a feeling that things will only continue to go up from here.At the peak of a bull market, many companies go public or make stock available for purchase to the public. An IPO is the term used when a company goes public. The reason IPOs show up when the market is in a bull period is because companies want to benefit from investor confidence. When individual investors are more optimistic, the company can gain the highest possible stock price. Individual investors often buy into IPOs with dollar signs in their eyes and anticipating instant riches from getting in on the ground floor of a companys stock history. Investing in IPOs is traditionally the method by that most small investors make their money. The bull market is further fueled and stocks begin doubling and tripling in value. At this point, those smart investors who purchased the undervalued stock at the beginning of the cycle are sitting in a prime position. At the perceived top of the bull market these investors can sell their now overvalued stocks before the prices start to drop. In the height of a bull market, there are often incidents of widespread greed. Corporate scandals arise, retail investors start to use margin investing to gain more stocks, and irrational purchases are made. The market is perceived to have no end to its growth so people start doing whatever they can to gain more stock with the false expectation that they will be able to sell for profit later.Once mutual funds and individual investors have fully invested their capital, the market becomes overbought. At this point the market can only go down. The speed of the downward trend is determined by the amount of negative news. As there are negative reports about stocks losing value, this causes more investors to sell and the cycle expands exponentially. The market always falls quicker than it has risen. If everyone tries to exit at the same time, there are no buyers for the stocks. If there is enough of a lack of buyers, the market can crash entirely. The capitulation of the market occurs when a massive amount of individual investors leave and the market bottoms out.

Up One Day, Down One Day; Stock Market Trading

Up One Day, Down One Day; Stock Market Trading
Market closing prices run up and run down faster than summer lightning strikes and rain pours. One day, investors are encouraged; the next day, investors are disappointed. Does the market mislead investors one day to sucker the same investor the following day? Or, does the stock market inform beyond immediate perception? The difficulty facing investors involves delving below the obvious market numbers. When the market makes accelerated pricing moves is there a warning message underlying the number? All conversations involve the spoken or obvious message and the unspoken underlying message. Getting to the "what is really being said" challenges everyone listening to the language of the stock market. As someone told me once, "The real message is always the message behind the message." Here are some messages within the message of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.Intra-day stock market activityMost investors ignore the opening, few glance at sidewalk tickers or hear intra-day TV or radio stock market reports. Markets drift or make wild intraday moves. In most cases, intra-day stock market price moves get their momentum from news. For example, "Stocks drifted lower in aimless trading Tuesday as mixed earnings news overshadowed an unexpected jump in consumer confidence and left investors cautious about extending the prior session's sharp advance." Each explanation references a news item. News moves the markets durng the day; company stock transactions provide the most obvious example of what news does to intra-day stock trading.Trading VolumeThe number of shares traded by a company stock or the equity market indices tells us the most. Volume matters in nearly every life-category. Often, I tell my children to "turn down the volume." No matter what direction the market moves, turning up the volume makes the message clearer. A company's stock price moves or broad market moves can be misleading. If a corporate stock reaches a new price high on lower volume, you may think all is well. In fact, the stock must make that new high price with strong volume (perhaps 3 times the daily average volume) to demonstrate strong buying activity. The same principle holds for market indices. High volume on the upside over successive trading days (no less than 3) recommends market strength; high volume on the downside suggests otherwise.Industry GroupsEvery bull market reveals industry group leadership. Briefing.com is one source of information about industry group strength or weakness. On this day, home entertainment software leads up while air freight and logistics shows weakness. You can also track 197 industry groups as an Investor's Business Daily reader.Leaders and laggardsEvery group has its leaders and laggards. When the broad market indices shift out of a bull (down) market, a new group of stocks will emerge as leaders. Watching these stocks during a bull market provides investors with insights about a bull market phase. When leading stocks suffer pricing weakness, investors should stay alert to broad market shifts on the downside. Stock leadership cycles from bull market to bear market to bull market.Making a correctionCommentators provide multiple excuses for the days when markets endure losses. Every bull market requires a 10% to 20% correction. This shakes out overly optimistic investors. Knowing when to get "in" and "out" of the market stymies stock market gurus. Some do it right some of the time, and others do it wrong all of the time. No matter what direction the market takes, equity/stock and debt/bond investors put their money somewhere. Usually, stock selling means bond buying. If stocks and bonds are sold, cash becomes the default investment. It all depends on the benefits perceived from any asset class.Charles Dow's "Theory" known as the "Dow Theory" provides some investment wisdom. Today's market activity (Dow Jones up with the Dow Jones Industrials "down") reminds us of 100 years of Dow's investment wisdom. His successor was William P. Hamilton (the fourth editor of the Wall Street Journal. * Hamilton's bullet points on Charles H. Dow's theory are helpful. "The Averages discount everything." * "The primary trend cannot be manipulated." * "Both the Industrials and Rails (the modern day Transports) must confirm each other in order for the signal to have authority." * "A rise in the Dow Jones Industrial Average must be 'confirmed' by the Dow Jones Transportation Average in order for the rise in the market to be sustainable." * Dow Industrials are companies that make; Dow Transportations are companies that deliver. If the transports are down, the industrials may be in trouble. Today, the Industrials are up (52 points); the Transports are down (80 points) Asset Class Correlation and Manager StyleAsset allocation across and within asset classes allows investors to endure the downs while waiting for upward moves. It is more likely for asset classes to gain value in a bull market, but all asset classes will not participate at the same time. This is what an investor wants: one asset class up when another may be down. Within asset classes, trading styles should differ. Each of these functions adds value to portfolio performance.

Another large stock market that is United States based is the Dow Jones Industrial Average. You might hear someone say that the Dow is up or down this is what they are referring to. Many stocks are introduced on the Dow. Many other countries also have a great impact on stocks. In Europe almost each country has their own stock market this includes Portugal, Germany and Lisbon. The people living and working there follow invest in the stock market there and just like in North America the stocks rise and fall. The people who handle the buying and trading are called stock brokers. Their job is to sell and trade the shares that their clients request. It's a demanding and rewarding job being involved directly in stocks this way. Stock brokers can make a lucrative income and the ones that study the markets and understand all the ups and downs have a definite advantage. The private companies do not have to answer to any shareholders. While this may sound optimal to many businesses it is important to understand the reasons behind going public. When a company goes public they will have a large influx of cash. The capital that comes with going public usually allows a company to do what they need to do in order to expand or better their company. If the stock market is going up it means that it is a market that is favoring sellers. The market will favor the sellers because the price of the stocks is rising. The buyers will have to buy the stocks at a high price. When the stock market is experiencing a downward trend the market becomes beneficial for the buyers. The buyers are able to purchase their stocks at a low price in hopes that they will sell them for much more in the future. To trade stocks you must trade through a broker. Whether the broker is online or you meet with your broker in person makes no difference. You are not able to go to New York and stand in the middle of the stock exchange to sell your stock. The only people that are allowed in the physical stock exchange are trained professionals. There are also trained professionals that will advise you as to which stocks you should invest in. They Say - You Cannot Time The Stock Market - Part 2

They Say - You Cannot Time The Stock Market - Part 2
Not many folks are adept at making money at investing in the stock market. Some people have a stock market trading system built into their psyche, but they are extraordinary. However, most of us mortals, don't have this instinct. Most of us flounder and make some money here and there and then lose a large amount of money on one or two trades.Investing is counter-intuitiveYou cannot win at trading the stock market, based on your emotions. That is how most human beings trade. The professional traders know that you are trading emotionally, and they take advantage of that fact. Trust me, they aren't trading emotionally. So what is the average feller, with retirement coming up soon, supposed to do?See previous article that discusses principles #1 & #2: Safety & Diversity, and,Ease of trading. We discuss Principles #3, #4 and #5 in this article.actuallyPrinciple #3: Time the marketI know. You have read many expert articles that imply that you cannot time the stock market. If you have a stock market trading system, you can time the market. You need something basic like: The market is bullish. Or, the market is bearish. Or, who knows? Get out of the market until it trends, again. You have to be on the right side of the market. Never short a bulish market. Never go long a market that is crumbling. These principles appear to be so simple, who would ever violate these rules? Many people do. I know I have. The trick is getting in on a trend. You don't care whether it is an up-trend or a down-trend You have to catch the trend. Will you get into the trend at the very kickoff of the trend? Probably not. But you will get in timely enough to get a good portion of it. Will you get out before the trend changing direction? Probably not. But, you won't be holding, and hoping, as most or all of your gains dissolve into some professional trader's checking account. When the stock market is consolidating. Sell your positions and watch - this is very bothersome for some investors, by the way. Many people are so eager to make money, that they think that they have to be in the market nearly all or all of the time. They over-trade, and get a little haircut here and a little buzz cut there, as the market moves back and forth. In a short time, if they do this for a period of time, they end up bald.Does a good stock market timing system get it right all the time? I have never seen one. But there are several satisfactory stock market trading systems available that make more money than the average person can make.If you are capable to get the timing services trade dates, you will look at them and think, "Well, I could have done better than that." In fact, you most likely couldn't - or you wouldn't be reading this article. You might consider the trades and think, why didn't they get in there? See the market was trending up. They could have made a great deal more money if they had entered the trade earlier. If you think like that, you are suffering from 20-20 disease. Or, perhaps, you should be loaning out your time machine, or crystal ball instead of investing in the stock market.Principle #4: Some strategies just don't work.Timing services are not dead-on. Let's admit that fact. In fact, gurus have stipulated that "buy and hold" is the method to invest. Well, let's look at the last 10-years. You would have lost about 28% if you bought and held. If you had purchased almost any mutual fund, you most likely would have lost almost as much. Check out several of our other articles that examine these facts.Perhaps you should merely "dollar-cost-average". That means you buy a fixed dollar amount of stock every month, or every year whether the market is going up or down. That hasn't worked in the last 10-years either. How about somehow finding a stock that is going up and keep buying more shares of it as it advances. Trust me, that doesn't work either. Does GM bring memories back? Does Novell or Cisco do anything for you?Ok then. What about following the maket experts? They are TV every day. There are countless investing blogs. There are services, I won't mention any names, that announce crumby, low volume, stocks to buy. If they have myriad of followers buying, the stock, that stock will go up. Then, of course, they sell before you do. You are left holding the bag.I've got it. Buy a stock that is depressed and is at the bottom and ride it back up. If you have been investing for a while, you will have learned this lesson, too The problem is this. Where's the bottom. Stocks routinely go down further than the charts would indicate. They can exceed support and go down in impressive, gut wrenching strides. If you buy at what you think is the bottom, you might find that you are now a "long-term investor". You convince yourself that If you hold it long enough, the stock will have to come back up - sometimes it doesn't come back up.Principle #5: Money Management StrategiesIsn't that what the old Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Snit, advertised as their accounts - money management accounts. I had one of those. That's not what we're talking about now. If we are going to have a stock market trading and timing system, we need to exercise money management. We have to by some means know when to "take the money and run"! We cannot go into all the specifics in this article, but to give you the simple principle, you have to take profits as the stock, or broad-based index is moving in your direction. When you have the right amount of profits, which is defined by the money management system, then, you should harvest them. Sell your holdings and put the money into your account, before the market reverses its direction and takes your profits away.If you do follow a defined, tested, money management systematic process, you will discover that you don't have to suffer as much draw-down. Draw-down is defined as the amount you are willing to lose from where you got on board, before the investment goes back into the positive direction - or, in many cases, you discontinue the trade. However, if you take the gains when the trend is very likely to end, you improve your account balance. In summary: You need to gain security by diversification. You have to have an easy to follow stock market trading system that doesn't take much of your time. You have to have a way of knowing whether the market is bullish, bearish, or should you sell and be out of the market for a while. You need to know when and how to take profits as they present themselves. And, finally, you need to know doesn't work.

The Stock Market; What It Is And What It Does

The Stock Market; What It Is And What It Does
Stock is a word that simply means supply, and the financial meaning of the word stock is a reference to a supply of money that has been raised by that company. People invest in a company, and the related stock, in the hope that the company will grow and so will their investment. A stock market is simply a public place where the business transactions involve stocks. The stock market is not actually a physical place, although Wall Street is the main street in the financial district of New York where a lot of transactions are done. The term Wall Street has become synonymous with the stock market. The stock market is crucial to trading stocks, and billions of dollars every day are traded on it. The stock market is simply a marketplace for the trading, buying, and selling of stocks. It allows the financial transactions that are necessary for stocks to be successfully traded. The stock market allows traders to buy and sell stocks, or pieces of ownership in a specific company, in a public marketplace.By owning stock, you also have the right to certain information about the company as a part owner. The more shares you own of a particular stock, the more influence you will have with the Board of Directors of the company. Only business that are incorporated may issue shares of stock. When a company becomes a corporation, it is completely separate from any office holders or other company personnel. It can issue stock which may be publicly traded. A stock is publicly traded on the stock market.Generally, the stock market is a marketplace where shares of stock are publicly traded. Stock is bought and sold by the millions every day on the stock market. Wall Street is the name that most people think of when they think of a stock market, and this is because this main street in the financial district of New York is the one that is shown in the movies and on television. The Smart Way To Get Started In The Stock Market

The Smart Way To Get Started In The Stock Market
Hollywood loves the stock market. The chaos of the stock exchange floor, the tension of boiler room day-trading, devious power brokers making back room deals; it all makes for great drama. Then you have the true-to-life stock market stories in the news: insider trading, big money IPOs, the dot com bust. All of it is enough to make you steer clear of the market for good and travel down a safer investment path. But don't be frightened, history shows that long-term, there's no better place to put your money to watch it grow. Here are a few tips to get you started.Stocks 101Simply put, when you purchase stock in a company, you become part-owner of that company. Along with other shareholders, you all combine as investors in the business, and therefore reap its rewards, or suffer its losses. Stocks are most commonly divided into separate categories depending on the size and type of the company (e.g., mid-cap, small-cap, energy, tech, etc.).While speculation can drive stock prices in the short term, it's long-term company earnings that determine a stocks gains or losses. Speaking of short term, that's when stocks are extremely volatile. Over a span of just a few months or years, stocks can climb to astronomic heights or drop to pitiful lows. But, since 1926, the average stock has returned over 10 percent per year. That's better than any other investment vehicle out there, and that's why stocks are your best bet for long-term investment.Picking StocksBefore you dive head-first into the market, there are a few things you should know about picking stocks. First, the market's performance as a whole is not necessarily a reflection of its individual stocks. Good stocks can keep growing even in a down market, while bad stocks have the frustrating tendency to drop or remain stagnant in a strong market. Also, remember that history is not indicative of a stock's future performance. Even solid stocks can slip from time to time. Remember that stock prices are based on a company's earnings outlook, not its past performance. If the future looks bright for a company, a $100 dollar stock is probably a good buy. If earnings look less than promising, even a $5 stock can be a waste. Finally, investors determine a stock's value by measuring a handful of primary criteria, most notably cash flow, earnings, and revenue."Diversify"It's the rallying cry of all smart investors. When compiling an investment portfolio of stocks, it's smart to own shares in companies from several different industries. Consider it a "hedge bet". When one part of the economy experiences a downturn, you'll have other stocks in your portfolio to put your faith in.When building your portfolio, the safest bet is to pick from financially strong businesses with earnings growth above the average. Surprisingly, that limits the lot to choose from, as only around 200 stocks today fit that bill. A solid portfolio features somewhere in the ballpark of 20 stocks selected from seven or more industries. A general rule of thumb is to invest in stocks with an above-average rate of growth and reasonable valuations.Buy and HoldDay trading is a great way to lose your nest egg, but quick. As we noted before, stocks over the short term are highly volatile. Sure, brokers today are offering cheap trades, but beware. There are a ton of hidden fees and taxes involved with day trading, not to mention the amount of attention required by you to monitor the blow-by-blow proceedings of the market. Our recommendation: buy and hold. A ten percent return over the long term is nothing to sneer at.

The Importance Of Timing In Forex And The Stock Market

The Importance Of Timing In Forex And The Stock Market
When we make money from the Forex we are looking for economic data which will influence the price of currencies. But when we are looking for good companies to invest in on the stock market we have been told to "Buy the blue chips." "Blue chips" are the big, reliable companies, and obviously these are listed for the most part on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones Average is composed of blue chips, and since there are only 30 listed, at the same time that the average has been going up, it might seem a simple matter to toss a coin to see which ones should be bought out of this list of 30.But let us get down to specific cases: Standard Oil Company of New Jersey is one of the largest, best managed and generally soundest corporations in the United States. Its earnings per share in 1958 were $2.72, in 1959 $2.91 and in 1960 $3.18. From 1957 through 1960 its dividends have been $2.25 per share each year. From the middle of 1957 to the end of 1960 the price trend of this stock was down. It declined from almost 70 to a point below 40.Another giant on the list of 30 Dow Jones stocks is the highly successful General Electric. From a high in early 1960 of nearly 100, GE plummeted to a level of close to 60 in the spring of 1961 because of the actions of the United States government in connection with price fixing by the corporation. There is some merit to the classical approach to the valuation of a stock by analyzing the underlying strength and prospects of the company, but this is only * An example of a high yield tax free bond is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Authority 5¾% bond. In 1961 this bond could be bought under 100 to yield almost 6% and this 6% is equal to 12% for a man whose top income is taxed at a rate of 50%.one of the elements to look at. It, of course, should not be overlooked because in the long run, earnings per share will determine the price of a stock. The only question is, "How long?" While you are holding a sound company's stock others may be moving up and you want to move up with them.Determine the earnings trend of the company over the recent four or five years. It should be up in general, but stocks have moved up in price while earnings were declining.Determine the position of the industry through reading the Wall Street Journal, the financial and business section of The New York Times, the Value Line Investment Survey, and the journals published by every industry and available in any library. The reason Standard Oil of New Jersey was not moving up more rapidly is due to the fact that the outlook for the petroleum industry was not as healthy as some of the other industries. The most important piece of advice that can be given the investor in stock is that the price of a stock is the direct result of the forces which make the price of anything (stock, commodity or service) demand and supply. For a long time in the spring of 19611 thought GE was a good buy; that it might go up. I questioned a number of brokers and investment bankers about GE. There was a distinct lack of enthusiasm. Since these are the buyers and these are the people who recommend that customers buy the stock, it was evident to me that the demand was not there. It might change very quickly, but until it did I determined to buy other stocks. It is important to emphasize this point once again: that the price of a stock is the direct result of how much of a stock is offered for sale and what the demand is. We will return later to this point with a striking example. The next most important piece of advice is that you should buy a stock which is moving up, not one which might move up or one which is moving down and looks as though it might be a bargain. You cannot hope to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. If you try to buy at the bottom you have no assurance that the decline has stopped; and if you try to sell at the top you cannot be certain the rise will not continue. Buy just after a stock has demonstrated its willingness to rise for a few weeks, and sell after about two weeks of decline. The most foolish piece of philosophizing that an investor can engage in is to say to himself, "I don't need to worry about the declining trend in the price of my stock. It will come back." Yes, it may, but when? And if you sold and simply held cash, you might for your cash get far more shares with which to ride the market up again. At the beginning of 1960 Shell Oil was well over 40. By the summer it was down close to 30, and by the spring of 1961 it was close to 45. The downtrend was clear and the uptrend was just as clear. A person could have sold early in the decline and bought early in the rise. My wife, being as good an analyst as I, if not a little better through"intuition," hit the low point and advised buying at that point. A profit of 50% could have been realized in one year!Next, follow the market and follow it every few days to determine trend. The closer you are to the market the better you are informed as to what to do. Do not worry about a decline of a few days or a sudden break in the market, no matter how sharp. Worry only about the trend of your stock and the trend of the market.Use the stop loss order to protect yourself against losses and to provide you with peace of mind. When you purchase stock after careful study and consideration, you may not want to put in an immediate stop loss order which is an order to sell if the stock reaches a particular price below the present market. In the past I have placed stop loss orders, when I bought stock, at about two points under my purchase price. If I bought a stock at 501 put in a stop loss order at 48. Very often the stock went down to 48 and I was sold out. I lost both in the price of the stock and in the commission and tax I had to pay when I bought and when I sold. Then I had the unhappy experience of seeing my stock rise above 50 and keep on rising. If an investor followed the rule of placing a stop loss order a few points under the purchase price, he could hardly ever purchase a stock that jumps around like O'okiep Copper. This stock jumps up and down two points during one trading session. If a stock goes up say 10 points, you may place a stop loss order three or four points under the market. This still prevents a loss and you have already made a good profit in the stock. The strict trailing stop loss order may hurt you not only by getting you out of a rising stock on a minor decline, but the use of trailing stop loss orders by the general investing public damages the market. A slight drop in price of a stock can touch off a series of stop loss orders which lower the price of the stock needlessly. The major value of having a stock market is the provision of a place in which to buy and a place in which to sell with little delay and at a price which can to a great extent be known in advance. For this reason stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the American Stock Exchange offer a great advantage to the investor. He knows where he stands by looking at the daily paper, and he has liquidity. He can get his money out of the stock in a matter of minutes. With the Forex our money is just as liquid and we stand to make more money in a shorter space of time, and we can put a stop loss to protect our position.Good software will help us predict future price movements in currencies and help us time our purchases and sales of currencies for maximum profit.

Share prices tend to rise or remain stable when companies and the economy in general show signs of stability and growth. After rising rapidly throughout most of the 1990s and into 2000, stock prices, as measured by the Standard and Poor (S&P) 500 Index, declined sharply from late 2000 until early 2003.
